What is Depression?

Depression is a serious and pervasive mood disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions day to day. It is far more than ordinary sadness or a passing bout of low spirits. When someone is living with depression, a persistent heaviness can settle over nearly every aspect of life, draining motivation, distorting self-perception, and making even routine tasks feel insurmountable.

Depression can also take many forms. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) involves episodes of intense, prolonged low mood that last at least two weeks and significantly impair daily functioning. Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD), sometimes called dysthymia, is a chronic, lower-grade depression that can persist for years and quietly erode quality of life. Other recognized forms include Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Postpartum Depression, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and depression linked to medical conditions or medication.

Depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, yet it is also one of the most treatable mental health conditions. At Asteroid Health in Newton, MA, we believe that no one should have to navigate depression without support. Our clinical team is here to help clients understand what they are experiencing and find a path toward relief and recovery.

Symptoms of Depression

Depression manifests differently from person to person, which is one reason it is sometimes difficult to recognize, especially in yourself. Symptoms can be emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral.

Common indicators include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that do not lift
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once meaningful or enjoyable
  • Significant changes in appetite or weight, either increased or decreased
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia, early morning awakening, or sleeping far more than usual
  • Fatigue and a profound lack of energy, even after adequate rest
  • Slowed thinking, speaking, or physical movement noticeable to others
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt, or harsh self-criticism
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities
  • Recurrent thoughts of death, dying, or suicide, with or without a specific plan

It is important to note that depression does not always look like sadness. Some people experience it primarily as irritability, emotional flatness, or a pervasive sense that nothing matters. If several of these symptoms have been present for two weeks or more, a professional evaluation with our team at Asteroid Health is strongly recommended.

Who is At Risk for Depression?

Depression does not discriminate. It affects people of all ages, genders, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic circumstances. However, certain factors are associated with a higher likelihood of developing the condition:

  • Family history: Having a first-degree relative with depression or another mood disorder increases risk.
  • Personal history of mental health conditions: Those who have experienced a previous depressive episode, anxiety disorder, PTSD, or substance use disorder are at elevated risk.
  • Trauma and chronic stress: Adverse childhood experiences, abuse, loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss, and prolonged caregiving responsibilities can all serve as triggers.
  • Major life transitions: Events such as moving, having a child, retiring, or entering a new life stage can destabilize mood even when they are positive changes.
  • Medical conditions: Chronic illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, thyroid disorders, and neurological conditions, are closely linked to depression.
  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones during puberty, pregnancy, the postpartum period, and menopause can increase susceptibility.
  • Social isolation: Limited social connections and a lack of meaningful relationships are both a risk factor and a consequence of depression.
  • Certain medications: Some prescription drugs, including corticosteroids, beta-blockers, and certain hormonal medications, can contribute to depressive symptoms.

Understanding risk factors helps with early detection, but depression can emerge in people with no obvious vulnerabilities at all. Regardless of the cause, effective treatment is available, and reaching out is always the right move.

Depression Treatment at Asteroid Health

At Asteroid Health in Newton, we provide comprehensive, individualized care for depression across a full continuum of treatment settings. Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, as well as medication management for patients who may benefit from that kind of support.

We take the time to understand each patient’s history, strengths, and circumstances before recommending a course of treatment.

Our three primary treatment settings include:

Psychiatric Day Treatment

Our Psychiatric Day Treatment program is the most intensive level of outpatient care we offer. It is designed for individuals whose depression is severely impacting their ability to work, care for themselves, maintain relationships, or stay safe. Patients attend structured programming for several hours each day. With the option to attend virtually, in-person, or on a hybrid schedule.

The day treatment program includes individual therapy, depression-focused group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and psychoeducation. Our team will monitor your progress closely and adjust the treatment plan as you stabilize and build momentum.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Asteroid Health bridges the gap between day treatment and traditional weekly therapy. Clients participate in group therapy several times per week and receive case management.

IOP is well-suited for individuals whose depression is moderate to severe but who have enough daily functioning to benefit from a less immersive structure. Group sessions address topics central to depression recovery, including identifying and challenging negative thought patterns, rebuilding engagement with life, managing low energy and motivation, strengthening social connections, and developing relapse prevention strategies. The IOP also provides a sense of community that can be especially meaningful for those who have felt cut off from others during a depressive episode.

Outpatient Individual Therapy

Outpatient individual therapy offers consistent, one-on-one support for clients managing depression at a level that does not require intensive programming. Meeting regularly with a dedicated therapist provides the continuity, trust, and personalization that are central to lasting recovery.

Our outpatient therapists at Asteroid Health are experienced in treating depression across its many characteristics. Sessions focus primarily on understanding the unique drivers of each client's depression, building practical skills for managing mood and daily functioning, and working toward a life that feels meaningful and worth showing up for.
