Trauma is the lasting emotional, psychological, and physiological impact of experiencing or witnessing events that feel threatening, overwhelming, or deeply distressing. While many people associate trauma with dramatic, singular events such as natural disasters or violent attacks, trauma can also arise from ongoing, cumulative experiences like childhood neglect, repeated emotional abuse, or prolonged exposure to instability and chaos.
Not everyone who lives through a difficult event will develop a trauma disorder, but many do. When the nervous system becomes stuck in a state of high alert long after a threat has passed, it can give rise to conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder, and adjustment disorders. These conditions are not signs of weakness. They reflect the mind and body's attempt to protect itself from further harm.
At Asteroid Health in Newton, MA, we approach trauma with care and deep respect for each patient’s unique history. We understand that healing from trauma is not a linear process, and we are committed to providing the time, space, and specialized support each person needs to move forward.
Trauma symptoms vary widely depending on the nature of the traumatic experience, your history and support system, and biological factors. They can appear immediately after a traumatic event or surface months or even years later. Symptoms often fall into four broad categories:
For individuals with Complex PTSD, rooted in prolonged or repeated trauma, additional symptoms may include difficulty managing emotions, a fragmented sense of identity, challenges in relationships, and dissociative experiences. If any of these symptoms feel familiar, reaching out to a trauma-informed professional like our team at Asteroid Health is an important first step.

Asteroid Health offers trauma-informed care that meets patients at whatever stage of healing they are in. Our clinical team is trained in a wide range of evidence-based trauma treatments, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for trauma-related emotional dysregulation.
We recognize that effective trauma care requires safety, consistency, and trust. Every treatment plan at Asteroid Health is developed collaboratively, ensuring that the pace and methods of therapy align with what you are ready for. We never push patients to process material before they have the coping tools and support to do so safely.

Our Psychiatric Day Treatment program is designed for individuals whose trauma symptoms are severe enough to significantly disrupt daily functioning but who do not require around-the-clock inpatient care. During this treatment, patients engage in structured therapeutic programming for several hours each day while returning to their home environment in the evenings.
This level of care is particularly beneficial for patients who are in acute crisis, recently discharged from an inpatient facility, or managing complex trauma that requires close clinical oversight. During treatment, patients participate in trauma-focused group therapy, individual therapy sessions, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management (if needed).

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Asteroid Health provides a higher level of support than traditional weekly therapy while allowing clients to maintain meaningful engagement with work, school, and family life. Patients attend multiple group sessions a week and receive weekly check-ins for case management.
The IOP is well-suited for clients who have achieved some initial stabilization and are ready to begin deeper trauma processing work in a contained, supportive setting. Groups focus on topics such as understanding trauma responses, building distress tolerance skills, navigating triggers, rebuilding a sense of safety, and developing healthy coping patterns. The peer community within these group sessions can be a powerful source of connection and healing for those who have felt isolated by their trauma.

Outpatient individual therapy is the foundation of trauma recovery for many clients. Meeting one-on-one with a dedicated therapist on a weekly or biweekly basis, clients have the space needed to work through traumatic experiences at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
At Asteroid Health, our outpatient therapists specialize in trauma and bring evidence-based techniques alongside genuine warmth to every session. Whether a client is processing a recent traumatic event or working through a lifetime of complex experiences, our clinicians are skilled in tailoring therapy to each person's needs, strengths, and goals.
Trauma shapes the way people see themselves and the world, but it does not have to define the rest of their lives. With the right support, healing is possible. Asteroid Health is proud to serve Newton, MA, and all other surrounding communities with compassionate, specialized trauma care across a full range of treatment settings.
