Anxiety is a natural human response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived danger. In small doses, it serves a protective function, sharpening focus and preparing the body to respond to challenges. However, when feelings of fear, worry, or unease become persistent, overwhelming, or disproportionate to the situation at hand, they may signal an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions in the United States, affecting tens of millions of adults and children every year. They encompass a range of conditions, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, and separation anxiety disorder, among others. Each condition has its own characteristics, but all share a core feature: anxiety that interferes with your ability to function in daily life.
At Asteroid Health in Newton, MA, we understand that anxiety is not simply "stress" or "nervousness" that a person can will away. It is a legitimate medical condition rooted in biology, life experience, and psychological patterns, and it deserves thoughtful, individualized care. We combine CBT, DBT, mindfulness, trauma-sensitive work, and emotionally focused strategies to customize treatment to your needs.
Anxiety presents differently from person to person, and symptoms can range from mild to severely disabling. They can also be emotional, physical, or behavioral in nature. Common symptoms include:
If you or someone you care about is experiencing several of these symptoms regularly, it may be time to seek professional support. Early intervention can make a meaningful difference in how you respond to treatment.
Anxiety can affect anyone regardless of age, background, or life circumstances. That said, certain factors can increase a person's likelihood of developing an anxiety disorder:
It is important to recognize that having one or more of these risk factors does not mean you are destined to develop an anxiety disorder. Likewise, people without obvious risk factors can still experience anxiety. What matters most is recognizing when anxiety has become unmanageable and seeking help.

At Asteroid Health, we offer a full continuum of care designed to meet clients where they are in their mental health journey. We believe that effective anxiety treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Our clinical team works collaboratively with each patient to develop a personalized plan that draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches.
We offer three primary levels of care for anxiety:

Our Psychiatric Day Treatment program provides a structured and highly supportive environment for individuals whose anxiety significantly impairs daily functioning but who do not require inpatient hospitalization. Clients attend programming several hours per day, multiple days per week, receiving intensive therapeutic services while returning home each evening.
This level of care is well-suited for those who are in acute distress, have not responded adequately to outpatient treatment alone, or are stepping down from an inpatient setting. Your treatment may include group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management.

For those who need more support than traditional weekly therapy but have enough stability to manage daily responsibilities, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a flexible yet structured treatment option. Patients participate in group and individual therapy sessions several times a week while maintaining work, school, or family commitments.
The IOP at Asteroid Health focuses on building practical coping tools, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, and gradually facing feared situations in a supported way. Many of our patients benefit from the community formed in group therapy and medication management, as well as close collaboration with their treatment team to adjust goals over time.

Outpatient individual therapy is a cornerstone of anxiety treatment and is appropriate for a wide range of individuals. At Asteroid Health, our therapists work one-on-one with clients on a weekly or biweekly basis to address the root causes of anxiety, develop personalized coping strategies, and build long-term resilience.
Sessions are tailored to each client's specific anxiety symptoms and goals. Whether someone is managing a specific phobia, pervasive worry, social anxiety, or panic disorder, our clinicians bring specialized training and genuine compassion to every appointment. Outpatient therapy may be combined with psychiatric services for clients who benefit from medication as part of their overall care plan.
If you or a loved one is struggling with anxiety, you do not have to navigate it alone. Asteroid Health is here to provide compassionate, expert care at every step of the journey.
